I feel the vast majority of people who shit on Nomura only do so because they can't be bothered to look up the other names of the people behind these games or what roles they have.Ģ. I spoke about this in my recent podcast, and I could still say a whole lot more, but let me try to structure my thoughts on the whole Nomura topic into four key points:ġ. I wouldn't be surprised to see the time when Kitase steps away where Nomura then starts taking the producer title, while maintaining similar involvement. But I think the structure internally is complicated and the Producer title is Kitase's until he moves on. Like, we know that story-wise, 'co-director' Toriyama was absolutely instrumental on the moment-to-moment feel of FF7R, because Nomura didn't have time for that shit.

Which actually is a lot like what Sakaguchi did on FF6, 7, and 9 - set a lot of the story table, set creative tone, had input on a lot of creative elements, but also handed much down to Ito/Kitase. The truth is Nomura's role on these games is probably more like a 'Creative Producer' role, as in mostly producery beats but also providing creative input. Which, if I was insulting KH, a bit nuts but go off - but I was encouraging it! I was saying let's fucking do it, go wild, it'll be fun! idk why people are so fragile about a guy on the top of his game & clearly having the creative time of his life tbh and despite the piece not saying a single bad word about KH, they decided 'full Kingdom Hearts' was a pejorative and filled my mentions with abuse for days. I said in an article once that I wanted Rebirth to go 'full Kingdom Hearts' - ie just be unleashed and as self-referential, deep, twisted, and mad as it wants, just let the team do whatever they want to do rather than be bound by the constraints of og FF7 or indeed FF in general.
